Colleagues,
Five years ago, you entrusted me with the responsibility of serving as the National Treasurer of our union. During this period, KMPDU has faced some of the most challenging moments in the history of our profession: prolonged industrial disputes, chronic underfunding of our health system, a political environment defined by austerity and shrinking public resources, and an increasingly organized attempt to silence and weaken healthcare workers.
We have gone on strikes to defend the dignity of our profession and the safety of patients. We have mobilized across counties and across sectors to demand a healthcare system that works for the people of Kenya. And behind these struggles has been the financial resources that sustain our organizing, our legal battles, and our solidarity.
Today, I humbly ask for your support as I seek re-election as National Treasurer.
As we look ahead, the coming years will demand even greater financial discipline and strategic thinking from our union. Kenya's healthcare terrain is becoming increasingly complex. Governments are tightening budgets while shifting the burden of austerity onto healthcare workers. At the same time, our union must expand its organizing capacity, strengthen our advocacy, and remain prepared to defend doctors wherever they practice. We then must become stronger and that strength requires a stable and expanding financial foundation.
One of the most ambitious projects we have embarked on is the national organizing drive to unionize doctors across both the public and private sectors. Our mapping shows that nearly 8,000 doctors across Kenya currently practice without the protection of a union. They face exploitation, precarious contracts, and isolation from collective power. Organizing these colleagues is a strategic necessity. By expanding our membership, we expand our power, close long-standing revenue gaps within the union, and build the financial foundation needed to sustain our struggles in the years ahead.
Over the coming days, I will be sharing my vision for how we can strengthen and stabilize the financial foundation of KMPDU while confronting the threats facing our profession. We will reflect on what our collective resources have achieved and we'll chart a path forward for how our finances can continue to power a stronger, more organized and more resilient union.
Our union was built through courage, sacrifice, and solidarity. The responsibility before us now is to ensure that it remains strong for the struggles ahead.
I look forward to walking this journey with you.
